We have already made a cup. A good follow-up to that is a box with a lid. The techniques used are largely the same, but to make the lid fit properly you have to work very precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It starts with splitting the wood for the cup and for the lid, with both parts coming from the same log and then above each other. In the photo the boxes come from one slice and the lids from the other slice. This ensures that the shrinkage for both the box and the lid will be approximately the same when the wood dries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After splitting, a hole is drilled on one side of the block of wood, into which a wooden mandrel is hammered. The cord for driving the pole lathe is placed around this mandrel. After this, the turning can commence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We start with the box, which is thus quite comparable to a cup. However, we make the wall a bit thicker, so that there is enough wood to turn a thinner part at the top edge. The lid must eventually fall over this narrower part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this, the lid is made. This is also in a way a kind of cup, but then very shallow. And of course upside down. You make the lid fit in such a way that there is still a little play on it. After the wood has dried, it fits perfectly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
