Handled bowl

Today was all about handled bowls. This is a bit more difficult to make than a regular bowl. This is mainly due to the shape of the outside of the bowl and especially the handles themselves. When turning the bowl, you will have a piece of wood passing by and then not (see photo). You should not move too much with your turning hook between the handles because otherwise you will not carve at all at the next handle, or you might slam it very hard against your tool. Now you can probably imagine that the fewer handles, the more difficult, because then no wood will pass by for a relatively long time until the next handle comes along. That is why we chose 4 handles for now. Later we will also make some with 2 and 1 handle.

In the first photo above you can see that we have also considered the design of the bowl in general. The gray shaded part between the two lines with 1/2 and 2/3 indicates where the base of the bowl will be approximately in relation to the upper edge. This applies not only to this bowl with handles, but to almost all bowls.

After turning the bowl, the handles are trimmed. To make sure that all four are the same, we made a template for the shape of the handle. We determined this by using examples from a book on traditional Swedish turning (Vackert svarvat – skönt målat).
